Nick Viti Awarded Therapist of the Year

Nick Viti, Director of Life Enrichment at The Cedars, recently received the Practitioner of the Year Award from the Maine Association of Occupational Therapists. The Cedars is thrilled that Nick received this peer elected recognition!

Nick began working with students and adults with behavioral disabilities after graduating from college, so Nick went back to school to earn his occupational therapy degree from the University of Southern Maine. After graduation, he worked with dementia patients in a  nursing home, and  loved his work but wanted something more—to truly get to know residents, develop personalized therapeutic goals for them, and create meaningful, enjoyable daily activities that reinforced those goals. The holistic approach to wellness at The Cedars was just what he was looking for, and he brought his passion for innovative, person-centered care and his in-depth knowledge of dementia treatment to The Cedars in 2013.

During his time at The Cedars, Nick has been an integral part of implementing some significant programs that help our residents with dementia thrive in their days.  Some of these programs include Music and Memory and Opening Minds through Art that put The Cedars on the cutting edge of long term care – which contributes to our extraordinarily low rate of antipsychotropic medication use. Congratulations and thank you, Nick!

National Award in Advocacy: John Watson, CFO at The Cedars

10537149_1666164483599358_4528360403060239793_nNOVEMBER 1, BOSTON – John Watson, Chief Financial Officer at The Cedars, received the Outstanding Advocacy Award as friends, family and thousands of Leading Age colleagues cheered him on. “It’s about time,” trustee George Marcus stated. John has been advocating for Maine’s non-profit nursing homes for years, and after educating legislators and stakeholders on the relationship between quality care and staffing, he was tremendously instrumental in bringing $25 million to Maine’s nursing homes.

“John has been a persistent advocate for folks who need to be understood and appreciated,” State Representative Peter Stuckey shares about Maine’s seniors with long term care needs. John started working at The Cedars when we were the Jewish Home for Aged on Munjoy Hill. He developed a tremendous command and understanding of the complex nature of long term care finances, and soon became involved in advocacy, thanks in great part to the programs Leading Age has offered.

We are so proud of John and his work both at The Cedars and in the State House. Thank you John, and congratulations!

The Cedars CNA Awarded Excellence in Care

Misty Seeley Excellence in LTC The Cedars

Melissa Jensen, Skilled Care Nurse Manager; Misty Seeley, CNA; Maine First Lady Ann LePage; Angie Hunt, COO at The Cedars

On September 18, the Ombudsman Program held its 13th Annual Excellence in Long-Term Care Awards event at the Blaine House in Augusta. Sixteen of Maine’s direct care workers were honored with the Excellence in Long-Term Care Award – including The Cedars very own Misty Seeley, CNA.

Maine’s First Lady, Mrs. Ann LePage participated in this special event presenting awards to the workers. Each recipient was chosen by an independent panel because of their demonstrated extraordinary leadership among their peers, dedication to resident rights and a commitment to providing excellent care. The Ombudsman Program recognized that every day Maine’s elderly and disabled citizens rely upon the skills and caring of the workers who provide essential care to them in long-term care facilities, like the Skilled Care Center at The Cedars. Congratulations Misty!

Exercise of the Month: Chair Stands

The Cedars Wellness Coordinator, Sarah Martin, recommends Chair Stands to strengthen your abdomen and thighs. And when you exercise remember:

  • Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program
  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing, and proper shoes that offer safety and support
  • Drink water before, during and after exercise
  • Make sure you stretch after you exercise

In a seated position with good posture and feet flat on the floor, cross your arms  over your chest or hold a ball with both hands at chest level. Keeping your weight
on your heels, stand up, using your hands as little as possible or not at all. As you
bend slightly forward to stand up, keep your back and shoulders straight. Take at
least 3 seconds to sit back down. Repeat 8 to 15 times or as many as you can
comfortably do with good form. Rest. Do another set of 8 repetitions.

Modification: If you are more advanced, try doing squats. Beginning in a
standing position with back facing the seat of a chair, slowly bend the knees to
lower down toward the seat of the chair. Stick out the buttocks so that your knees
do not jut beyond your toes. Just before your buttocks gets to the seat of the chair,
stand back up to the starting position in a fluid motion, squeezing your buttocks
and putting all the weight in your heels as you push back up.
